WHAT : THE GREAT BIG BANYAN TREE
WHERE : THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY, CHENNAI, TAMIL NADU, INDIA
The Theosophical gardens, which surrounds the society headquarters is around 270 acres of old woodland and gardens and boasts of a 400 year old banyan tree which is said to be the second largest in the world and able to provide shade to nearly 3000 people at one time. The aerial roots cover some 60,000 sq. meters.
It is one of the largest tree in the world. It measures 238ft from north to south and 250ft from east to west.
The giant banyan tree, came with property acquired in 1908. Its sprawling branches were once held up by a 40-foot tall, 30-tonne trunk and thousands of pillar-like roots dropped from the canopy.
Some of the major discourses and speeches by the great philosopher J Krishnamurthi, Annie Besant, Maria Montessori and other members of the society are conducted under this tree.
