The other day, I had visited Ryan Catholic Community centre in Townsville for the NAIDOC (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) celebration and was really touched by a short story told by Father Dave Lancini.

There is an old but profound native American story which brings to light the power of each individual to create or to destroy.and goes like this:

One evening, an elderly cherokee brave told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.

he said “my son, the battle is between two ‘wolves’ inside us all.

One is evil.

It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance,self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride,
superiority, and ego.

The other is good.

It is joy, peace love, hope serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”

The grandson though about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather:

“which wolf wins?…”

the old cherokee simply replied,
“the one that you feed”

Be aware of the fact that there is a saint and sinner in each of us, a yin and yang power that keeps thing in balance.

In being aware of this reality we are then prepared to ‘feed the right wolf within’  as well as see this duality in others.
